We really enjoyed the 'Members Night' at the Marx Toy Museum (MTM) in Moundsvill, WV in June. One of the treats of the evening was the chance to look through the notebooks of Marx historic items that Francis Turner keeps. I think Dave Roth, Scott Stewart, and Jim Wolfe all saw the page in one of the note books listing an intended 'Johnny West' playset. I wish we had a picture or copy to list out what was suppposed to have gone in the set...... Grayson was going back through pictures from all of the Marx Conventions we have been to. He was looking at pictures of prototypes in the MTM and noticed something really exciting (for us anyway). I will put a couple of pictures in with this message. See if you can spot the playset information..... Lee Attachments:

I wish they would've made that camping set. No doubt it would have been hugely popular. Worth some $$$ today too.

Here is another pic. Have you spotted the playset? (had some problems loading earlier, so took some time to get it out there). Attachments:

I think this picture has been in the case every year, but we have not looked closely enough. Attachments:

Finally here is the closest we could come from the pictures we had. Looks like Marx was pretty serious about coming up with a Johnny West Playset. As I mentioned, there was a production sheet of some kind in the materials Francis Turner had, and now this picture of a set that includes a description and a sign saying 'Johnny West Ranch'. Maybe eveyrone else knew, but this was really cool for us. Grayson came running outside to get me to come in and see the close-up of the picture. Lee Attachments:

You guys will have to go back and take another picture of that set. Does it have unique figures or did they just use what they had? Very cool anyway.

Grayson is going over what we can see in the picture and matching it against some of the playset items he has and getting web pics for some others. We think this was like other proto-types and they may not have made any new, or specific figures until they had some interest in the product. Looks like it just did not get that far. So far we have seen things that were used in other sets (Ranch House from the Rifleman set, horses from Roy Rogers and Ben Hur sets, etc.).
Once he has his list, we would really like to try and purchase the right things and pull it all together for our own Johnny West Ranch set.

When that list gets together I would appreciate a copy. I have purposely avoided playsets for many reasons the main one space to display but wouldn't mind putting this one together or a reasonable facsimile.

Unfortunately, I cannot access the cool photo to enlarge from the museum, as on this picture (and ANY photo on the forum), I get an error message that says "forum has exceeded attachment size limit. Does that mean we can no longer view or place photo attachments in our posts? Any ideas?

Very cool. I have photos of myself with Johnny and General Custer for Christmas when I was 6 or so. Need to dig those out and share! Thanks for the photo help. Looks, though, like the majority of users on the forum use a method that "zaps" the forum memory when one tries to click on pictures to enlarge and see better….
