Anyone on the forum collect the vintage Matchbox brand Fighting Furies pirates from the mid-1970s? I still have Hook, in Sears mailer box, Captain Peg-leg (complete in the box), boxed Kung-Fu Warrior and Hooded Falcon sets, plus I have the Sears version of the Fighting Fury ship, which is the rarer complete ship fold-out carrying case, still complete. Great link: plaidstallions.blogspot.com/2010/02/matchbox-fighting-furies-gallery.html

I had completely forgotten about this series! WOW... made me remember the Planet of the Apes figures we had about the same time, too.

Maybe that deserves another thread? I have all 10 of the POTA Mego figures. At one time, I had the throne, treehouse, catapult/wagon, battering ram, village, and Forbidden Zone playlets. I have thinned it out quite a bit and only have the FZ playlet now with the figures. Great series! Lots of cool Mego POTA customizers out there.
Anyone else collect the Fighting Furies or had them as a kid? I have NEVER taken the map out of Captain Peg-leg's "peg-leg", so it is still mint. Word of warning, if you take it out, it is almost impossible to get it back in again with tearing or destroying the map….

I was older when they came out, but my little brother had a few. They weren't around long due to his method of play though...he was VERY hard on his toys, lol.

Just saw the playset ship for these figures at a local antique shop. Anyone interested at $50. I will happy to play intermediate.

Which version of the playlet ship is it? Is it the full ship (Sears exclusive) or the "half ship" more common version?

It was a red vinyl and had a turn snap and then unfolded, so I assume the half ship. I didn't have them open the case but the sign said complete. I can get photos and more details if necessary.

I would say based on what I saw and was able to view it was number 1. Two things could make a difference however in the one I saw today had some items I took to be unassembled sails and I was unable to view the sears ship. If it was one based on the wheel and rails the snap to open was different but similar to matchbox car carriers I have. I am heading back tomorrow for a better look.

Strike the last comment, I just googled the Sears set and I definately think this is the one I saw today. Heading back tomorrow to get a better view and see if everything is there.

Okay. If it has sails, it is the Sears version. I have that version complete, although mine has started to come apart where the metal grommets have started to pull through the vinyl hinge over the years. Heck the toy is almost 40 years old. If complete, it comes with the following: vinyl chair, nylon hammock and rope, vinyl ship wheel, vinyl anchor and rope, three orange "spacers" that go between top sections and keep them linked, two wooden masts and tan joiner, nylon sail, black pirate flag (sticker), vinyl ladder, and of course, stickers set.

Ok it is missing the chair and two spacers and in addition to what you have noted is has a plank for walking! The stickers are attached but all appear to be there. How does the mast attach?

Yes, you are right, I forgot to include the plank. This was all from memory. The mast is kind of weird. You open the case to provide the two interior rooms and then snap it together on top. The mast literally fits between the two interior rooms. You slide it in, and they hold it up by being snug together. That makes sense? also by adding the string for the mast ropes (I provided that myself) makes the sail more stable. The sail slides on a smaller brown dowel, and that dowel attaches to the middle of the upright mast (2 pieces joined with plastic "sleeve") with a rubber band.
I will pass, as I have it complete, but sounds like a GREAT price for $50. Would be almost impossible to beat that price on eBay...
