Why did the seller put in 5 pictures of the plastic harses which are not for sale? And none of the aluminum one which is? Go figure.

Been very curious about this item myself,,, was gonna bid on it,,, but now that it's been shared here; there'd be no chance! But I'm glad it's been shared here,,, cuz I wanna know what the dealio is!! Readin' the item description,,, we're told the Black & Palamino Thunderbolts shown are not for sale,,, the Brown one shown in all the pix I believe is the Aluminum Horse! It's indeed a little smaller, which ya can tell, by the 3rd, or center pix standin' side by side with the Black Thunderbolt! The seller says too, that he got it at an estate/barn sale, & he's tellin' all he knows,,, he/she himself/herself, is questionin' it's origins!!! I'd really like to hear Scott, & Tim chime in here! Thinkin' about the plastic injection molding system,,, realizing there had to be original sculptures done of the figures, in order for a mold to have been made,,, & knowin' what I do about (art) metal reproductions of sculptures originally done in stone; I can only imagine that this horse might be part of the beginning stages of production on the original Thunderbolts!?? I have a feelin' this is gonna go for a lot more than fifty bucks!!! What do ya'll imagine it's origins are!? Adios Amigos, Mykol

Hmmm, nice. But I don't believe it is part of the production process. Alum wouldn't stand up to the molten beryllium copper used to make the cavity molds... I'm not sure how the tenite master sculpts were molded by Ferrier brothers.. May be a lost wax method or just pouring the copper over the actual tenite... not sure. But no need for an additional 'step' of slush casting a metal horse. This could have been made by using the original molds and pouring alum inside (not under pressure) when the alum cooled it would have shrunk a bit (could also account for the date stamp becoming unreadable). If it is solid metal, I would guess someone remolded TB and used that to make a solid horse again accounting for size changes and date stamp obscuring... I'm voting for the latter. Scott

That's kind of what I was thinking, Scott, but my last experience in casting was high school industrial arts about 100 years ago, so I didn't feel qualified to even speculate, lol.

If you fool around in photoshop, the makers mark on the metal horse looks to read backwards from right to left. Now I'm not sure what that really means but I'm leaning towards "fan produced".

I threw in the first bid and am now trying to decide what to do since I have been outbid! I have no concept of casting and production but like Mykol wondered if it was perhaps an early preproduction piece but with other comments have went away from that. Unfortunately I am not looking for many more pieces and like to buy odd stuff when I find it.

I don't think it has much value as a Johnny West piece. But if you like odd stuf this would be that. I have got most of the Johnny West stuff but the what is left tends to be very expensive.

Same boat! The expensive doesn't bother me since one or two items a year spaced out over twelve monthes is actually cheaper than when I was buying the bulk of the collection. I just miss the thrill of finding stuff as often. If I had any artistic ability I would try my hand at customizing!

I made a mini run at it but my heart wasn't in it for a big battle. More things will be coming down the road I'm sure. If I can just get there ahead of Dave!!! If a rancher got this I would love to see some better pictures or even the horse itself in Wheeling next year.

Hey if you can't spur a friend who can you spur! ;D
I thought things were a little quiet from you folks about this subject so assumed you were or were going to be in the mix.
The seller wouldn't answer any questions from me either if it makes you feel better.

Indeed, sometimes as much as I would like an item . . .
If a SELLER does not respond to Buyer inquiries . . . RUN, don't walk, in the opposite direction!
P.S. It is often a good indication how the rest of the transaction will go - especially if a problem develops if/when the item is received.
There are WAY MORE great Sellers out there, so do them the favour and throw your business THEIR way.
(Just my 2-pesos worth.)
